UW-Green Bay presents drug impairment training course for educators
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will offer Drug Impairment Training for Education Professionals, a timely and relevant course for area educators, Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Crossroads at Big Creek Environmental Preserve in Sturgeon Bay.
During this one-and-a-half-day course, participants will learn how to identify a student who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, as well as how to appropriately address this situation in the school environment. The class will help educators deal with Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AODA) issues, including how to recognize types of drugs and signs of chemical impairment in students and other individuals.
The course, which runs from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, is geared toward teachers, administrators, community agency, health and law enforcement professionals. Taught by Southern Door High School Principal Steve Bousley, who has extensive training in drug identification, non-violent crises intervention, behavior management and other areas; as well as Officer Jeffrey Meloy, drug recognition expert and patrolman with the city of Watertown Police Department, the course can be taken for one graduate credit or as a noncredit option. It is offered in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Southern Door High School and Crossroads at Big Creek.
Area educators have lauded the drug impairment training course as an eye-opening experience that gives them a better understanding of drugs and alcohol generally and how abuse can affect their students specifically. It is just one of many Winter/Spring 2012 Offerings for Educators, presented by UW-Green Bay’s Division of Outreach and Adult Access.
