48 Hour Film Horror Sci-Fi Project filmed at UW-Green Bay-Sheboygan
A dedicated group of 16 local filmmakers teamed up to create a short film that’s entered into the annual 48 Hour Film Horror Sci-Fi Project – Wisconsin challenge under the team name Neon Perspective.
Within literally 48 hours, the team wrote, filmed and edited a six-minute short horror feature.
To participate in the event, every registered team is given a specific sub-genre in both sci-fi and horror categories, a required prop, required character and required line. This ensures that groups truly made their masterpiece in 48 hours and forces even more creativity.
Neon Perspective was given the horror genre “witchcraft” for the film. The required line was “That came out awkwardly.”, the required prop was a recorder (which could be an instrument, tape recorder, camcorder, etc), and the required character was “Aaron Rose, psychologist”.
By the end of the weekend, Team Neon Perspective completed the film “Good Intentions”. The film’s logline is: A school psychologist has a hell of a night after a student claims she hears disturbing voices on her tape recorder.
“We began writing at around 7PM on Friday night and were done around 1:30AM technically on Saturday, started filming at 7:45AM on Saturday and finished filming at 1:30AM on Sunday. By 9AM on that Sunday, we edited the project until 7PM. Everyone gave up their whole weekend to make “Good Intentions” and the final project shows the efforts,” says director/producer Aubrey Laux.
The short was filmed entirely at the UW-Green Bay Sheboygan Campus. There were 32 total Wisconsin teams participating. “Good Intentions” is in the running for multiple awards, including best film, best writing, and the Spirit of the 48. “After how hard every single person worked to make “Good Intentions”, I truly hope that we win at least one award from the Wisconsin 48. We have amazing shots, lighting, music, acting, and effects. I’m so proud of what the team accomplished. I’m really excited for the premiere. It’ll be awesome to be reunited with the cast and crew. Plus, how often can you say your film was shown at a drive-in theater?” Laux notes.
The Neon Perspective team consists of: JJ Burkart, Ehren Fleschner, Mike Q. Hanlon, Dan Janeshek, Matt Kaczkowski, Dan Kelly, Zack Kruse, Aubrey Laux, Tyrone Lucious, Danno Maki, Claudia ‘Claude’ Neve, Debra J. Onsager, Mattie Theune, Anders Waage, Riley Wadzinski, and Jake Wolfe.
Laux plans to enter “Good Intentions” into multiple film festivals. “I want the work that the team did to go as far as it can,” Laux says. “I hope to work with everyone who was a part of this year’s team again, whether it’s for the next project or another wild 48.”
While the team name was Neon Perspective for this 48 Film challenge, director/writer Aubrey Laux and writer Jake Wolfe also create art, zines, photography, and now films under the name Neon Perspective.
Neon Perspective is already working on their next project. “We’re finalizing the script for our next short film; one that allows a bit more time.” Laux reveals. Their sophomore film is tentatively titled “The World is Ending and I’m Stuck at Work”, which is being adapted from a comic Laux and Wolfe wrote together; the comic is currently on sale at Sheboygan’s comic bookstore, The Bugle.
