Marvel’s newest anti-hero to visit UW-Green Bay
Alaqua Cox, who plays Echo in “Hawkeye” and “Echo,” is part of UWGB’s First Nations Education Celebration on April 19
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – The star of her own Disney+ series as Marvel’s newest anti-hero is coming to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay next week.
Alaqua Cox, who plays Echo in the limited series “Echo” and “Hawkeye,” is appearing for U.W.-Green Bay First Nations Education Celebration on Friday, April 19.
The event is for students, staff and faculty, and an RSVP is required to attend. Virtual attendance will be freely open to the public.
Cox, 27, was born on the Menominee Reservation and grew up in Keshena.
She made her acting debut in “Hawkeye” in 2021, shattering a glass ceiling for actors with disabilities. Cox was born deaf and has a prosthetic lower right leg. She performed most of her own stunts in the two action-driven Marvel series.
Cox was only the second deaf actor to star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Costars Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld learned American Sign Language, and a unique fighting style was choreographed to protect her hands and adapt to her prosthesis, according to Internet Movie Database.
Cox will join a moderated discussion at the event to acknowledge achievements in First Nations Education.
U.W.-Green Bay offers a doctorate in First Nations Education. The university describes the program “exists to expand your knowledge about Indigenous peoples, and prepare you to change institutions, promote First Nations cultural resurgence and foster the vitality of future generations.”
