UW-Green Bay Philanthropy class seeking proposals from local nonprofits to receive $10,000 grant
Green Bay, WI — Students in the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s 2024 Philanthropy: Civic Engagement Through Giving class will award a $10,000 grant to a local organization of their choosing. The funds were made available by The Learning by Giving Foundation, founded by Doris Buffett and by an anonymous donor to the UW-Green Bay Foundation.
Students in the class are seeking proposals for strategies to address the issues of social isolation and drug addiction among youth.
The class issued a Request for Proposals on Feb 29, 2024. They are seeking grant proposals for programs that align with their mission to “empower youth by decreasing social isolation, establishing community connectedness, and strengthening resilience against addiction.”
The Request for Proposal is available on the class’s Facebook page. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 18, 2024. Submit proposals by email to UW-Green Bay Associate Professor Lora Warner at warnerl@uwgb.edu.
The class chose to address the issues of social isolation and addiction among youth after conducting research on the topics of addiction and youth mental health in the Green Bay area. Social isolation among youth has become a significant concern following the pandemic, and research has shown that loneliness is associated with high-risk behaviors such as alcohol and drug abuse. “After researching the areas of addiction and youth mental health separately, we realized that we could address both by focusing on one of the root causes of both–social isolation,” explains Connor Tenor, a UW-Green Bay student.
The course is taught by UW-Green Bay Associate Professor Lora Warner. This is the 12th time UW-Green Bay has offered the course, which has given away more than $100,000 to community organizations over that time. The hands-on, student-led approach allows students to become well informed on issues our community is facing, engage with local nonprofits, and have a positive impact on the Green Bay area.
The class will announce the funding recipient at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2024, in the MAC Hall Atrium on the UW-Green Bay campus. The event is free and open to the public. Follow along with the class’s progress throughout the semester via their Facebook page.
