GREEN BAY ― Running for office and being a staple of community activism isn’t something many 21-year-olds can put on their resumés.
But that’s not even half of what Hannah Beauchamp-Pope has accomplished in her last four years as a student at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Beauchamp-Pope is this year’s commencement speaker, and she graduates Saturday, along with the rest of the class of 2023. This group of students entered their college experience in the fall of 2019 and spent the next two years navigating a pandemic, racial justice issues and everything else that comes with being a young adult.
A double major, Beauchamp-Pope studied democracy and justice studies with an emphasis in criminal justice and psychology along with two minors.
“I really like school,” she said.
She’s poised to continue her studies at law school in the fall. Where? She’s still deciding.
Her ultimate goal is to use the law to change the way American social systems work.
“Rather than them being built on like profits and capitalism, it’s more centered on love and education,” she said.
Through community and campus grassroots organizing, Beauchamp found her voice for activism.
Over the last four years, Beauchamp-Pope has led or founded four student organizations. She’s the president of the Black Student Union, co-founder of the Phoenix Law Society and an chief justice on the Student Court at UWGB.
She’s a board member for the Leaders Igniting Transformation, a Black and Brown youth-led organization that uses advocacy to create a more equitable society.
