UW-Green Bay Announces Week of Events Honoring Veterans
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 24, 2024
Green Bay, WI – The Veteran Services Department at the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay will hold a week of events for active duty, reservists, veterans, and the spouses and children of veterans beginning Saturday, November 9 through 14, 2024. All events are open to the public and the community is encouraged to attend. The entire week of events is as follows:
Saturday, November 9, at 1 p.m.
UW-Green Bay Women’s Basketball Military Appreciation Game
Kress Event Center – versus the University of Northern Iowa
All military members receive 1 FREE ticket (must show I.D.)
Monday, November 11, at 12:30 p.m.
Veteran POW/MIA Table – Leona Cloud Commons, University Union
Cadets Elizabeth Eckes and Joshua Mikula will lead the dignified and solemn ceremony to honor and recognize the sacrifices of those Americans who have been prisoners of war and to remind the Nation of those who are still missing in action. It involves a table with a single chair, usually set off to the side. The table is set with a white tablecloth, a single candle, a book of faith (optional), an inverted glass, and a single red rose in a vase, around which is tied a red or yellow ribbon. A plate containing a slice of lemon and a small amount of salt is set on the table.
Nothing is more poignant than witnessing the empty chair sitting at a POW/MIA table with incredible significance for every displayed feature of this ritual. Many narratives have been written for the ceremony, but the symbolism is constant. Witnessing the ceremony that accompanies this memorable event brings more than just a single emotion. Please join us in remembrance.
Wednesday, November 13, at 4 p.m.
19th Annual Chancellor’s Reception – The Weidner Foyer, UW-Green Bay Campus.
Open to the public. Reception begins at 4 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, open bar and vendors. The program, featuring emcee John Maino, will start at 4:45 p.m. honoring and recognizing new military students, graduating military students, donors, and recipients of Veteran scholarships. Guests may come and go as they please and attend any portion of the event. Attire is business casual.
Thursday, November 14, from 11:30 a.m.– 1:30 p.m.
Veterans Pizza Lunch – Veterans Lounge, Mary Ann Cofrin (MAC) Hall, UW-Green Bay Campus
We invite you to join us for free pizza to recognize the Phoenix who have served and/or are serving our country. The gathering will include resources available to our service members, such as the County Veterans Officer, Accessibility and Health and Wellness providers, and community employers from the area.

UW-Green Bay Veteran’s Services is here to help veterans, and their families thrive at college and receive the benefits gained from service. About 1300 veterans and dependents of veterans receive education benefits at UW-Green Bay each year. Of this number, 377 are military veterans or current service members and 933 students are the spouse or child of a Veteran. Some of these students are on active duty one week and in the classroom the next. This is just one reason the transition from military service to the community can be very unsettling. UW-Green Bay’s Veteran’s Services is here to help.
