Six more join Board of Directors of UW-Green Bay Foundation

Six individuals have accepted invitations to join the Board of Directors of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Foundation, Inc., it was announced Thursday, Sept. 1.

The newcomers include regionally and nationally prominent business leaders as well as civic contributors with longstanding ties to campus and community. The additions, effective immediately, bring the number of voting directors to 25.

New to the Board of Directors are Gerald (Cort) Condon, Philip B. Flynn, Beth Gochnauer, Mark King, Mark Skogen and James (Jim) Wochinske.

Also formally announced Sept. 1 are five ex-officio, non-voting directors, as identified by the Foundation bylaws, who serve by virtue of their ongoing relationship with the University. They are Cliff Abbott, Donna Sheedy, Scott Wochos, Beverly Carmichael and Thomas K. Harden.

Members of the Foundation board enjoy dual appointment as members of the UW-Green Bay Chancellor’s Council of Trustees, which has an advisory and advocacy mission.

The six new directors/trustees include two graduates of UW-Green Bay, and two who live outside the state of Wisconsin.

Gerald (Cort) Condon

Condon is an attorney and partner in the Green Bay law firm of Condon & Herald, and a specialist in corporate and tax law. His involvement with UW-Green Bay is highlighted by his service on the board of University Village Housing, Inc., the local non-profit corporation that has built modern residence halls on campus since the mid-1980s. Condon has been active in a wide range of community organizations promoting education, health and youth initiatives. He is an award-winning alumnus of the accounting and finance program at UW-Madison, and holds a law degree from the University of Colorado.

Philip B. Flynn

Flynn has been president and CEO of Associated Banc-Corp, based in Green Bay, since 2009. He has three decades of experience in the financial services industry and came to Green Bay from an executive position with Union Bank, San Francisco. Flynn earned a liberal arts degree from Claremont McKenna College, in California. In accepting the invitation to serve at UW-Green Bay, he continues a pattern of Associated Bank involvement that has included corporate and individual support since the institution’s founding; Rose Hall on campus is named for the late John (Jake) Rose, the Associated Bank founder often credited with being the University’s first and most influential booster.

Beth Gochnauer

Gochnauer was a member of UW-Green Bay’s Board of Visitors, a forerunner to today’s Council of Trustees, from 1974 through 1982. She and her husband then left the area to pursue career opportunities that took them to Milwaukee, Arizona and California before returning to the Midwest; they now reside in Winnetka, Ill., near Chicago. Beth Gochnauer is chairperson of the Gochnauer Family Foundation. Among her philanthropic interests are education, the Children’s Home and Aid Society of Chicago, and micro-lending as a way to foster development in impoverished nations and regions. She is a graduate of the Northwestern University college of arts and sciences.

Mark King

A 1981 Business Administration graduate of UW-Green Bay, King is president and CEO of TaylorMade-adidas Golf, headquartered in Carlsbad, Calif. Under his leadership, TaylorMade has grown from $300 million to more than $1 billion in sales in less than a decade. He was named Golf Executive of the Year in 2002. Golf Inc. magazine consistently rates him among the 10 most powerful people in golf, and he has been featured in some of the nation’s top business publications such as The Harvard Business Review, Fortune and Brandweek. King returned to UW-Green Bay in December 2006 to deliver the commencement address, and in recent years his personal, TaylorMade and PGA connections have combined to make his annual Green Bay golf fundraiser a signature event for the Phoenix Fund.

Mark Skogen

Skogen is president and CEO of Skogen’s Festival Foods. He joined his family’s business full time after earning his business degree from Viterbo University in 1992. Since then, what was once a small chain of IGA stores in the La Crosse area has grown to become a statewide presence and one of America’s top 20 small chains/independents as ranked by Supermarket News. Skogen is active in the community, serving as campaign chair for the 2011 Brown County United Way campaign. He also serves on board of directors including the Green Bay Packers, the Boys and Girls Club of Green Bay, and the UW-Green Bay Phoenix Fund.

James (Jim) Wochinske

A 1974 Managerial Systems graduate of UW-Green Bay, Wochinske is president and owner of Pomp’s Tire and Auto Service Inc., headquartered in Green Bay. He assumed leadership of the family business upon the retirement of his father, Roger, in 1986. With more than 75 stores or retread centers in eight Midwest states, Pomp’s is among the largest independent dealers in the United States. Wochinske has been active on behalf of UW-Green Bay for many years, supporting the Alumni Association, Phoenix Athletics, the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts, and the Kress Events Center.

The UW-Green Bay Foundation, Inc., was established as an independent 501(c)3 organization in April 2011 when the University filed articles of incorporation and the Chancellor’s Council of Trustees approved bylaws. The creation of the Foundation gives the University greater flexibility in managing gifts and assets and in being proactive it its private fundraising.

The five ex-officio directors include a faculty member, two officers of the institution, and two citizen volunteers who head up organizations that support the University’s mission.

Abbott is secretary of the Faculty and Academic Staff at UW-Green Bay and professor of Information and Computing Science. Carmichael is assistant chancellor for university advancement, and Harden is the UW-Green Bay chancellor. Sheedy is president of the UW-Green Bay Alumni Association and manager of investor relations for Integrys Energy Group, Inc., while Wochos is president of the UW-Green Bay Founders Association philanthropic organization and senior vice president for Green Bay Packaging, Inc.
