Juilliard drummer Carl Allen gives free concert at UW-Green Bay
GREEN BAY — Renowned Juilliard drummer Carl Allen returns to Green Bay with a Julliard jazz quartet for a free concert this Sunday, April 5, on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus.
The concert, hosted by the Jazz Society student organization at UW-Green Bay, starts at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre inside Theatre Hall, 2420 Nicolet Drive.
Allen, a student at UW-Green Bay from 1979-1981, is currently the interim artistic director of jazz studies at The Julliard School in New York City.
The quartet features Allen on drums, accompanied by three Julliard graduate students playing piano, saxophone and bass. The concert should feature a range of jazz music and styles.
“Carl is a great musician, a great drummer and a great teacher,” said UW-Green Bay Professor of Jazz Studies John Salerno. “It should be a wonderful, free concert.”
Allen has served as a musical director and band-mate for Freddie Hubbard, and has played with the likes of Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Benny Golson, Jennifer Holliday, J.J. Johnson, Rickie Lee Jones, Sammy Davis Jr., Branford Marsalis, Kenny Garrett, Lena Horne, Ruth Brown, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Mike Stern, Nellie McKay, Terence Blanchard, Phil Woods, Benny Green, Cyrus Chestnut, Joe Henderson, Billy Childs and many others.
He has also co-founded Big Apple Productions and leads a quintet, Carl Allen & New Spirit.
