UW-Green Bay to present infant bereavement conference March 21
UW-Green Bay Continuing Professional Education will present “Loss of an Infant: An Understanding of Perinatal Grief and Bereavement,” from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, March 21 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center, 2040 Airport Drive, Green Bay.
This all-day workshop will explore the history of engagement with perinatal grief and bereavement, and will include a viewing of the award-winning 1985 documentary film “Some Babies Die.” Participants will gain an understanding of the relationship between personality predispositions to negative emotions such as guilt, shame and jealousy, and grief within and between individuals and families who have experienced a perinatal death such as a miscarriage, stillbirth or death of a newborn. Professionals will gain practical strategies and explore innovative approaches to enhance their work with those impacted by infant loss.
The presenter for the conference is Dr. Peter Barr, a neonatologist and senior staff physician at the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (Westmead), New South Wales, Australia. He has studied perinatal bereavement and grief for more than three decades, and co-founded the Stillbirth and Newborn Death Support (SANDS) group in New South Wales. Barr and SANDS co-founders Deborah de Wilde and Julie Dunsmore were featured in the film “Some Babies Die,” which will be shown during the March 21 conference. Barr in 1992 earned the Medal of the Order of Australia for his contribution to the understanding and management of perinatal bereavement, and has spoken all over the world about perinatal grief and bereavement.
The cost for the March 21 event is $99, which includes instruction, lunch, materials and continuing education certificate. Barr also will give the keynote address for the seventh annual Grief Support Symposium, taking place from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 22 at UW-Fox Valley’s Communications Arts Center-Perry Hall, 1478 Midway Road, Menasha. The event, for which UW-Green Bay is a co-sponsor, will include Barr’s address at 8:30 a.m., as well as two breakout sessions, information booths and light snacks and refreshments.
