Lawton Gallery to present guest-curated exhibit beginning March 7

The Lawton Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will present a guest-curated exhibit, “Post-Conceptual Glitter: A Mastery of Fine Arts Exhibition,” Thursday, March 7 through Thursday, April 4. The gallery, located in Room 230 of Theatre Hall on campus, will be closed March 18-23 for spring break.

Guest-curated by UW-Green Bay alumnus Scott Vanidestine ’10, the exhibition features works by 26 current and former students in the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Using a number of different media, the exhibited works address a wide range of issues in both humorous and serious ways. Some of the works encourage audience participation; these include the “roll on the floor laughing” carpet and a picnic installation.

The namesake “glitter” in the works of these post-conceptual artists is generated by the tensions created through their simultaneous affirmation and critique of both modernism and conceptual art — critical of the idea of an anti-aesthetic and yet unable to fully embrace the idea or concept to take precedence over traditional ways of art-making and the materiality of objects.

The exhibit will kick off with an opening reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, with a talk by guest curator Vanidestine at 5 p.m. The Lawton Gallery is open from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday during fall and spring semesters, but will be closed March 18-23 for spring break. All gallery events are free and open to the public.
