35 years ago this month, the UWGB men’s basketball team squared off against the Wisconsin Badgers at the old UW Fieldhouse in the much-anticipated first matchup between the two programs, one of the most memorable games every played. Behind 5-10 point guard Tom Diener, the plucky Phoenix had the game all but won, twice — before John Bailey tied it for the Badgers on a half-court heave at the regulation buzzer, and Greg Dandridge coolly sank two FTs after the first OT expired with a phantom (and should-have-been-after-the-horn) blocking call against the Phoenix. Since that 2OT loss, the Phoenix men are 1-19 all-time against UW, the only win coming at the Resch in 2009. Tipoff is 8 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, Dec. 23) at the Kohl Center on WNFL 1440 AM and the Big Ten Network on cable.
