Women’s soccer star Drusch earns league scholar-athlete award

Congratulations to UW-Green Bay junior goalkeeper Maddie Drusch of Appleton, named the Horizon League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for the month of September. She becomes the first Green Bay women’s soccer athlete in the program’s history to earn the award. On the field, Drusch ranked 10th in the NCAA in save percentage (.902) at September’s end. In the classroom, Drusch earned a 4.0 grade-point average in the spring of 2010, taking on a total of 17 credit hours, majoring in elementary education. Read more.

Women’s soccer: scrappy defense
How’s the team doing this year? Sometimes defense wins titles, and sometimes it wins only respect. In 12 regular-season matches heading into their contest Friday night (Oct. 15) at UW-Milwaukee, the Phoenix women’s soccer team (2-7-3) has scored only six goals, all of which came in the team’s two wins. They currently are scoreless over their last seven matches, and have been shut out 10 times, yet… a young team continues to compete hard with scrappy defense and determined play. All but one of their seven defeats have been by 1-0 margins, and they earned a 0-0 draw (naturally) with Valpo last Sunday. Their next (and final) home game isn’t until noon Sunday, Oct. 24, vs. Detroit.
