Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt to officially proclaim Oct. 9, 2012 as Phuture Phoenix Day

Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt will issue a proclamation officially declaring Oct. 9, 2012 as Phuture Phoenix Day, in recognition of UW-Green Bay’s signature program that raises college aspirations for students from low-income schools . The text of the proclamation is as follows:

PROCLAMATION 

WHEREAS,                Phuture Phoenix inspires students by encouraging them to believe a college education can be in their future; and

WHEREAS,                Phuture Phoenix began in 2003 and has hosted over 10,000 fifth grade visitors to the UW-Green Bay campus to give them a clear vision of what college looks like; and

WHEREAS,                over 250 UW-Green Bay college mentors work with our fifth grade visitors every fall and over 100 faculty volunteer to open their classrooms to encourage and engage students; and

WHEREAS,                we continue to support those students by sending college students into middle and high schools to mentor and tutor them, which provides on-going academic support so students can achieve their dreams; and

WHEREAS,                Phuture Phoenix continues to involve community members to assist our next generation of leaders;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, James J. Schmitt, Mayor of the City of Green Bay, on behalf of the citizens of Green Bay, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, October 9, 2012 as:

“PHUTURE PHOENIX DAY” 

in the city of Green Bay, and urge citizens to join with me in recognizing the efforts

of the Phuture Phoenix program at UW-Green Bay.
