Photos: 2009 retirees reunion

Nearly 75 UW-Green Bay retirees and spouses recently gathered to celebrate the 10th annual Retirees’ Dinner in the Phoenix Rooms. The celebration carried the theme “Reflections,” reflecting the 40 years that have passed since the campus opened its doors to students at its 2420 Nicolet Drive.

UW-Green Bay Retirement Association President Ken Fleurant (French, Humanistic Studies), announced a number of initiatives of the organization, highlighted by an oral history project. It is expected details of the project will be shared more widely as the initiative takes shape.

“We’re starting with the early years, from about 1968 to 1975, and we’ll go both forward and back from there,” Fleurant said. “The hope is to tap into the memories of our early faculty and staff, and have those memories preserved. About ten people in the room were here when campus first opened its doors to students.”

The group was shown a preview of the oral history, featuring interviews with Founding Chancellor Edward Weidner and retired faculty member Elmer Havens (English). Betty Baer (Social Work) is chairing the oral history committee. The retiree group also plans to work to attach photo IDs to many of the hundreds of photographs of people and programs documenting UWGB’s early year

The Association unveiled a new website which will help the Association with communication efforts. The Association was officially organized in 2008 to promote and nurture mutually beneficial relationships between the campus and its retirees. The group hopes to announce the timing and criteria for the first Retirees’ Scholarship in the year ahead. Four committees have formed: programming, service, communication and membership.
