UW-Green Bay Athletics Names Former Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy as its Inaugural Executive in Residence

Green Bay, WI —The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay announced today that former Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy is joining the Phoenix as its inaugural Executive in Residence. Murphy will have an office in the Kress Events Center Athletics offices on the UW-Green Bay campus, effective immediately.
“We are honored to have Mark Murphy join UW-Green Bay as an Executive in Residence,” shared Chancellor Mike Alexander. “His passion for this region, belief in the importance of education, his experience as a D1 Athletic Director, and his incredible qualities as a leader will continue to inspire us.”
“I’m honored to be named UWGB’s Executive in Residence,” said Murphy. “I have tremendous respect for both Chancellor Alexander and Josh [Moon], and look forward to helping them keep UWGB’s athletics program competitive in the rapidly changing Division I landscape. I’m also excited to go back to my roots in college athletics at a school that means so much to the local community.”
Murphy will primarily focus on elevating the profile and strength of Phoenix Athletics’ D1 programs and building partnerships throughout the region with individuals and businesses. He will assist with strategic projects including capital improvements, sports sponsorships, and long-term sustainable excellence modeling for Phoenix athletics. Murphy will also assist with mentorship of coaches and staff and special initiatives for the Chancellor, including Phoenix Innovation Park.“We are thrilled to have an amazing leader like Mark join us for this next chapter in his career,” said Mark Murphy Endowed Director of Athletics Josh Moon. “His legacy with the Packers speaks for itself and he will help us in so many ways as we continue our RISE. Moon was named the first Mark Murphy Endowed Director of Athletics at UW-Green Bay in November 2024 after the university received a lead gift from the Green Bay Packers to establish and endow the postion. The Executive in Residence role further cements the relationship between Murphy and the Phoenix.
Prior to being named the Green Bay Packers President and CEO in 2007, Murphy had a long career in college athletics, serving as the Director of Athletics at Colgate University from 1992-2003 and Northwestern University from 2003-07. Murphy had an eight-year NFL playing career with the Washington Redskins (1977-84); served as co-captain from 1980-84, including the Super Bowl title team of 1982. He earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 1983 after leading the NFL with nine INTs. He is the only person to earn a Super Bowl ring as a player (XVII, 1982) and as a team’s chief executive (XLV, 2010).
Mark Murphy Endowed Director of Athletics
UW-Green Bay and the Green Bay Packers announced Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024 that the Packers would make a lead gift to establish and endow the Mark Murphy Director of Athletics position at the University. The gift connects and honors two aspects of Murphy’s professional life, college athletics and professional football. During his time in Green Bay, Murphy has been a vocal supporter of
UW-Green Bay, serving on the Council of Trustees and participating in fundraising and promotional activities to benefit the university. Josh Moon became the first ‘Mark Murphy Endowed Director of Athletics’ immediately.
