FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 27, 2024

Nationally known course designer, Cale Leiviska, develops premier course in the region

Green Bay, Wis.— The visionary work at UW-Green Bay continues. The new Shorewood Disc Golf Course will be available for both student and public use just in time for the start of the 2024 fall semester. The newly designed disc golf course will be located within the updated Shorewood property, allowing even more people to enjoy the beauty of the UW-Green Bay campus. A grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, August 17, 2024.

The course was designed by nationally known disc golf designer and pro Cale Leiviska. With a degree in Conservation Biology and background in Forest Management, Leiviska brings his love for the sport and expertise in preserving a course’s surrounding natural beauty to the new Shorewood Disc Golf Course, making it one of the premier courses in the state. “I was out there for a few days on this gorgeous property and I couldn’t be more excited for this project to be completed in the coming months,” said Leiviska. “There is such a great mix of open/wooded, rolling elevation, water hazards and a wooded/ravine section that will give this track a balanced variety of throws.”

Over the past two years, UW-Green Bay has transformed the Shorewood property into a community-use park that has drawn thousands of visitors to campus and has created a place that hosts robust programming and activities for the campus and the region. The park now features:

  • A championship level cross-country course that has brought in thousands of visitors with over 15 total meets since its debut– from middle and high school to St. Norbert College and UW-Green Bay meets. In 2024, the course will host the Horizon League Championships.
  • Biodiverse, natural wildlife including plantings and growth of prairie grasses to amplify the beautiful natural landscape and ecosystem.
  • UREC Outdoors main office in the renovated Shorewood Center (formerly the golf course clubhouse) which runs free events for students at Shorewood including kayaking and canoeing, hiking, bike riding. Various classes are offered including survival topics, wilderness medicine, and camping ‘how-to’ and low-cost outdoor equipment rentals to the University community and public.
  • Opportunities to enjoy the winter months. The cross-country trail is groomed for UW-Green Bay’s Division 1 Nordic ski program, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat tire biking. UREC Outdoors runs free events for students to ski and snowshoe on these trails.

Future development includes installation of a kayak rack and slip at the retention pond, improved winter trail grooming capability, outdoor learning and rest areas for students and more.

The new Shorewood Disc Golf Course adds to this innovative new space. Disc Golf is a rapidly growing sport in Wisconsin and the nation. It provides a self-paced, relaxing and rewarding activity that is an excellent opportunity for individuals and groups to engage in social activity, team building, exercise, enjoying nature, and physical and mental wellness.

“It’s exciting to see the vision of the Shorewood property starting to really take shape,” said Ethan Harvey, outdoor adventure recreation coordinator for UW-Green Bay’s UREC programs. “Shorewood Park represents an amazing opportunity for both UW-Green Bay students and the community to explore the outdoors, enjoy time together, and create a community around this beautiful, predominantly natural space. I am really excited about how we are opening up this space to multiple user groups like runners, walkers, birders, bikers, and disc golfers – really making this area available for a wide range of users. I can’t wait to see where Shorewood Parks takes us in the coming years as the vision for the property continues to shape itself.”

A grand opening ceremony will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 and offer a free-to-play opportunity for all who want to experience the challenge of the sport, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Shorewood property. Harvey notes that plans are already in the works to host a disc golf tournament next year.

Shorewood Disc Golf Course continues the vision of the Shorewood property, making it a destination for students and the community. Support for the new disc golf course comes from the UW-Green Bay Student Government Association and the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay Foundation. In addition, people are encouraged to give to the Shorewood Fund through the UW-Green Bay Foundation.  To learn more about UREC, please visit their web site.
