Memorial service for Al and Maurine Loomer is May 23
Al Loomer, an emeritus professor of mathematics at UW-Green Bay and an active presence on campus all throughout his long retirement, died Friday night at a medical facility in Ripon. He was 97. His death came less than a week after that of his wife, Maurine, 96.
Loomer joined the UW Center System campus in Green Bay in 1955, continued teaching until 1983, and never stopped participating in major institutional events including commencement. He was introduced on stage, in fact, at May 2009 commencement by Interim Chancellor David Ward who, acknowledging the tough economy, advised grads they should follow Loomer’s optimism and example. Ward noted that Loomer received his bachelor’s degree (from Acadia University in Nova Scotia) in 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, “and he certainly went on from there to a career of great distinction.”
A memorial service for Al and Maurine Loomer will be held Sunday, May 23, at Union Congregational Church, 716 S. Madison St., Green Bay. Visitation will be at 2:30 p.m., with a service at 4 p.m. For snapshots at our blog post, and a link to a Press-Gazette story, click here.
