Police chief talks license plate technology with Fox 11 News
University Police Chief Tom Kujawa gave WLUK, Fox 11 reporter Laura Smith the rundown Thursday (Nov. 21) on the department’s new Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system, in light of a proposed bill that would restrict the technology because of privacy concerns. As we told you here previously, UW-Green Bay obtained ALPR earlier this year to enhance safety — the technology quickly identifies problem vehicles, including those of individuals banned from campus — and assist with parking enforcement. But a proposal from Rep. Dave Craig, R-Big Bend, would allow use of the cameras only during a crime investigation, would prevent law enforcement from sharing the information with non-government entities, and would require data destruction within 48 hours if the info wasn’t needed for an investigation. Smith’s story on the system and related proposal aired Thursday; you can check it out here.
