New disc golf course comes to university campus in Wisconsin – WPR
Across the world, the sport of disc golf is gaining popularity. And here in Wisconsin, the number of players might go up with the addition of a new disc golf course on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s campus.
The Shorewood Disc Golf Course had its grand opening earlier this month. And with its 700 wooded acres and lakeshore views, UW-Green Bay’s Outdoor Adventure Recreation Coordinator Ethan Harvey said he hopes it will bring more people out to enjoy the area.
“The short answer is: It’s accessible, and it’s affordable,” Harvey said of why UW-Green Bay built its new course on campus. “It’s a fantastic way to utilize a beautiful piece of landscape that we had on our hands.”
Harvey recently spoke on WPR’s “Wisconsin Today.” He was joined by Lindsey Krause, a nationally ranked disc golf player and director of the Lakeshore Ladies Disc Golf Corporation, based in Manitowoc.
Disc golf plays similarly to traditional golf, though plastic frisbee-like discs replace clubs and golf balls.
“Like you would have multiple clubs, you have multiple discs for different shots,” Krause said. “The concept is similar. You start on a tee and you are trying to get to and in the basket in as few throws as you can.”
Krause called the course’s designer, Cale Leiviska, one of the top disc golf course designers in the world. Leiviska’s portfolio includes courses like The Preserve in Minnesota, which disc golf news site UDisc ranked among the top 50 courses worldwide for three years straight.
