Barbara Shakal grew up in Green Bay, but she discovered Door County as a teenager.
“Whitefish Dunes State Park has been my second place since I was 19,” she said. “I’d come up here with my little infant daughter and spend the day. It was a place where we could get centered, and I absolutely loved being here.”
She still does. When it came time for Barbara and her husband, Carl, to look for a property in Door County, they focused on the area around Whitefish Dunes, buying six acres on Clark Lake Road near the park and building a house in 2003.
In addition to the house, the couple decided to rebuild a barn on the property that had burned in the 1980s. They started with the rocks that had fallen, then bought trailer loads of Door County field stone from a nearby farmer to create walls two feet thick and 13 feet high. Forest Construction topped it off with a pavilion-style ceiling.
