P-G: Budget proposal would cut $247,000 Oneida compact allocation
The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported online Friday that among the additional losses for UW-Green Bay under the proposed state budget would be elimination of $247,500 in funds from Oneida Tribe gaming revenues intended for tourism and economic development. University spokesman Christopher Sampson said the funding dates to 2001 and the signing of new statewide gaming compacts, the opening of the Resch Center, and efforts by local legislators to ensure that some of the Oneida’s contributions in lieu of taxes would be returned to Northeastern Wisconsin. He said the allocation was primarily used to fund the annual Oneida Bingo and Casino holiday tournament. When NCAA scheduling requirements changed in 2007, the tournament was discontinued; funds remained in the intercollegiate athletics budget with a significant portion used to cover guarantees for visiting teams to the Resch during the non-conference season.
