UWGB coach remembers Bob Uecker’s legacy and unique broadcasting style | Fox 11 News
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Mike Kline, a coach at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, found out about the passing of Bob Uecker while listening to the local sports radio.
He says that even though baseball isn’t his favorite sport, he was a huge Bob Uecker fan and was shocked to hear the news on Thursday morning.
“In the back, we had a radio, and the radio either had the Cubs on or it was the Milwaukee Braves. And just, we were just brought up listening to that you know that was like our music,” says Kline.
Kline’s father is the one who got him into listening to Uecker, and even though he isn’t the biggest fan of the Milwaukee Braves or Brewers, Uecker’s storytelling really drew him in.
“I just enjoy listening to him. The Brewers could be ahead 10 to nothing, they could be behind 10 to nothing. I didn’t care. Listening to Bob Uecker made the game,” says Kline. “He made baseball come to life no matter if it was a good game or it wasn’t a good game.”
Kline says that one of the best parts of listening to Uecker was how unique he was compared to other sports broadcasters.
“He was, but he still taught that we could understand it, and like I said he could laugh at himself and sometimes today in professional sports you know people, they can’t do that. I think it’s important to do that,” says Kline.
He hopes that people will continue to talk about his legacy and remember all of his best moments.
“We’ll miss him. We’re gonna miss Bob Uecker, there’s no doubt about it. But hopefully, now people just think back. Think of all the good times. I always tell, you know. Think of the good times, think of the memories. And keep talking about him,” says Kline.
