“There is only one Division I college Nordic cross-country ski team in the state of Wisconsin – the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Coached by 27-year-old Sam Myers, an alumnus of the ski program who now works as a real estate agent as well, the program was founded first with male student-athletes in 1988, with women added to the team a few years later.
Its biggest challenges? UWGB does not race on a home course and, in recent winters especially, does not always have natural snow for practices.
But it provides a valuable opportunity for students to get an education while skiing competitively. UWGB can offer scholarships to its skiers since it is at the DI level. The Phoenix competes against other DI schools as well as Division II and III teams. It is not a club team.”
