Workshop: Making Excellence Inclusive
Visiting consultant Alma Clayton-Pedersen said she was impressed by the sizeable turnout (well over 100 faculty, staff and students) and the level of commitment when she visited UW-Green Bay for a “Making Excellence Inclusive” workshop on diversity, Jan. 19.
Clayton-Pedersen offered definitions of “Inclusive Excellence,” challenged UW-Green Bay to move beyond numbers and goals in promoting diversity, and explained why a relatively new classroom tool, “clickers,” allow faculty members to foster a more inclusive environment. She said there are no easy answers, and achieving inclusive excellence is hard work.
She also said she was impressed by many of the initiatives and priorities she encountered during her UW-Green Bay visit. She pointed to a diversity video on the uwgb.edu website, featuring Chancellor Tom Harden relating his personal experiences with diversity, as setting a good tone for further conversation on the issue.
