Latest Windows 10 update now available

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay IT Service Desk wishes to inform all staff and students of the latest Windows 10 Operating System Update – 21H2.

What is happening?

An update is available to change the operating system from Windows 10 20H2 to Windows 10 21H2. As with all things technology, Windows occasionally needs to be updated to the latest version in order to stay current with Microsoft updates. The next feature update is due by the end of this year. This update will be available in Windows Software Center should you wish to complete the update before the required installation date of January 6th, 2023. This featured update will take about 30 minutes to 1 hour to download and install. Your computer will need to be restarted in order for the update to install, so please save all work before beginning the update. The Service Desk is here to help, so please reach out with questions.

When is this happening?

The deadline to install this update will be January 6th, 2023. The update will be available at any time before the deadline in Software Center. To not interfere with fall semester, the software will be available the entire semester with a deadline of January 6th, 2023, at 4pm. After the deadline, the update will automatically install.

How will this affect me?

If you have not already updated your Windows computer, you will need to prepare to do this update sometime before the end of the year. To check which version of Windows you currently have, simply type into the search box of Windows 10, “winver” and push enter. If your version is 20H2, you will need to do the update. If your version is 21H2, you are already on the required version. Please allow 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete the update. Your computer will restart automatically when the update is complete. You do not need to watch the update complete – you may simply start the update and come back to it when it’s finished. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Service Desk.

Why does this matter to me?

Staying on the most current branch of Windows 10 ensures that everyone is up to date with security patches and in-line with vendor support.

What’s new about Windows 10 21H2?
  • Full graphical support for Windows Subsystem for Linux
  • Latest configuration service provider interfaces for IT professionals
  • Ongoing service support and security patches, through 2025
