Emmy, meet Tony: Green Bay native Shalhoub gets first Broadway nod

Green Bay native Tony Shalhoub has received a Tony nomination for best featured actor in a play for his performance in “Golden Boy.” In this revival of a Clifford Odets play, Shalhoub plays the father of the central character, a young man torn between possible careers as a violinist and a boxer. It’s the first Tony nomination — Broadway’s equivalent to the Oscars — for Shalhoub, who won three Emmys for his performance of the title character on TV’s “Monk.” As we’ve told you here before, Shalhoub didn’t actually attend UW-Green Bay — but he did star in the University’s 1973 production of “Captain Jack’s Revenge” as a high school senior. The late Jack Frisch directed the young Shalhoub, recalling him as “very good” in a “tour de force” role.
