UW-Green Bay’s Lawton Gallery to showcase work of artist Velliquette

Chromatopia, by artist Michael VelliquetteThe University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Lawton Gallery will present Chromatopia, featuring new works by artist Michael Velliquette, Sept. 15-Oct. 6.

The show will be introduced with an opening reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, which will include a 5 p.m. artist’s talk. The gallery is located in Theatre Hall on the UW-Green Bay campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.

Chromatopia presents a new body of work from mixed-media artist Velliquette that furthers his interest in the interaction of form and color. The artist’s works are infused with aspects of tantric drawing, totems, sacred architecture and votive statuary.

Four distinct series make up this installation, including miniature gouache paintings, mixed media drawings, paper constructions and plaster sculptures. Collectively, the works are suggestive of relics or artifacts from a culture devoted to the worship of vivid hues and complex patterning.

Velliquette’s recent museum exhibitions include Slash: Paper Under the Knife at the Museum of Art and Design (New York); Art on Paper at the Weatherspoon Art Museum (Greensboro, N.C.); and Psychedelic at the San Antonio Museum of Art. His work has been included in PaperCraft and Papercraft 2 published by Gestalten, Berlin. Velliquette’s 2011 solo show at DCKT Contemporary in New York, titled Awaken and Free What Has Been Asleep, was reviewed in Time Out New York. He has been a resident artist at Artpace, San Antonio (2004); Vermont Studio Center (2008, 2011); SÍM Artist Residency Reykjavik, Iceland (2008); and Kohler Arts / Industry Program (2009). Velliquette lives and works in Madison. To view more of his work visit www.velliquette.com.
