Hip-hop legend Lil Wayne endorses Doug Gottlieb hire at Green Bay

Noted Green Bay Packers fan and hip-hop legend, Lil Wayne, is also throwing in his support for the local university and its surprise hiring of basketball lifer and radio personality, Doug Gottlieb.

The rapper posted to his Instagram account Friday a video message in support of Gottlieb, who was hired by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay to lead the Phoenix as men’s basketball coach last month after Sundance Wicks returned to the University of Wyoming to lead the Cowboys, where he was an assistant prior to the Green Bay job.

Gottlieb’s hire left the basketball world puzzled as the university announced that Gottlieb would continue hosting his national radio program on Fox Sports and coach at the university.

But those concerns don’t have “Mr. Carter” distressed. The easy-going, five-time Grammy Award winner said this hire should excite the fanbase.

“You have a new fan,” he said. “So, to the alumni, the student-athletes, the community, the whole Wisconsin, the whole Green Bay, the players, everybody, the families of the players, the families of the students, everybody, everybody. You got you a coach, man. Dougie G. You got you a coach, man. For real, for real.

“All I know about Dougie G is basketball, and all Dougie G knows is basketball. And now, all I know about Dougie G is UWGB basketball.”

UW-Green Bay’s Instagram account commented on the video, “Thank you for the support and welcome to the Phoenix Family!”

The video will certainly be a nice one to have in the back pocket as Gottlieb attempts to build a strong basketball program while dealing with all the challenges that comes with recruiting players.

Gottlieb recently received commitments from former Providence forward Donovan Santoro and former Oklahoma State center Isaiah Miranda.

Gottlieb, born in Milwaukee in 1976 and son of UW-Milwaukee coach Bob Gottlieb, played his college ball at Oklahoma State. The recruiting commitments show that Gottlieb won’t be shy about getting players from around the country in addition to the several players with Wisconsin ties already on the roster.
