UW-Green Bay hosts 2023 Northeast Wisconsin Suicide Prevention Summit
The virtual summit is held in partnership with UW Oshkosh and the Center for Suicide Awareness
Green Bay, WI — UW-Green Bay, UW Oshkosh and the Center for Suicide Prevention are partnering once again to host the fourth annual Northeast Wisconsin Suicide Prevention Summit be held virtually on Thursday, May 11, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The goal of the event is to promote suicide awareness, deepening the understanding of key questions. Who is most vulnerable? What are the risk factors? How can family, community, co-workers and professionals reach out?
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), death by suicide is the leading cause of death in the United States with a death occurring about every 11 minutes. Suicide has a far-reaching impact, affecting not only the person attempting suicide but everyone around. Yet suicide is preventable, and everyone has a role to play to save lives.
“We are dedicated to preventing suicide through proactive education, training, emotional support, collaboration and intervention,” said Barb Bigalke, executive director/founder, Center for Suicide Awareness. “Our partnership with UW-Green Bay and UW Oshkosh on the summit helps us amplify our mission.”
A highlight at this year’s all-day summit is a keynote address by multi-genre vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Bailey James, who lights up ‘Music City’ with her sophisticated soulful country music. As one of the hardest working artists in the music industry, she has produced 19 singles and an EP. Bailey knows first-hand the impact of suicide. Her brother Zane took his own life, and she has struggled with mental health issues since adolescence. She copes and shares her journey through her music.
In addition to the keynote, there will be sessions about:
- Surviving Suicide(s)
- Don’t Leave Before the Miracle
- A Journey Back from the Abyss
- It’s Time to Write a New Story
The summit will conclude with a panel discussion with SOS Kaukauna sharing their challenges after the sudden death of someone close by suicide. For health and human service professionals, attendance at the summit earns continuing education 0.6 CEUs/6 CEHs.
