Title IX – Then & Now: Celebrating 50 Years of Impact

UW-Green Bay to host event celebrating 50 Years of Title IX, Sept. 15, 2022. Panelists include National Women’s Swim Champion Tracy Arendt, Green Bay Women’s Basketball Alumna Jeanne Stangel 

Green Bay, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay kicks-off a series of events to celebrate 50 years of Title IX and its impact, with a reception and panel discussion on Sept. 15, 2022 at Fort Howard Hall in the Weidner Center. The public and media is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Order of events:

  • 4 – 5:30 p.m. – light reception and cash bar
  • 5:30 – 7 p.m. – panel presentation

Title IX protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. Title IX states:

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

While Title IX prompted vast changes in sports programs and created more opportunities for women in college athletics over the past 50 years, it also led to equality of higher education opportunities in many other ways.

This panel discussion will explore Title IX: where we’ve been, where we are now, and where we’re going. Join the panelists as they discuss their own experiences, observations about how things have changed, and the many ways Title IX manifests itself throughout higher education, and well beyond, into the workplace.

Panelists include:

  • Abbey Sutherland, current UW-Green Bay volleyball coach and panel moderator
  • Tracy Arndt, community member, national champion women’s swimmer at UW-Madison just before passage of Title IX
  • Tiffany Paalman, current UW-Green Bay volleyball team captain
  • Christopher Paquet, UW-Green Bay Title IX Coordinator, assistant vice chancellor policy and compliance
  • Jeanne Stangel, President/CEO of Curative Connections, UW-Green Bay Women’s Basketball alumna

There is no cost to attend. Registration is required. The event is co-sponsored by the Title IX Committee and the Institute for Women’s Leadership at UW-Green Bay.
