UW-Green Bay alumnus Frederick “Doc” Heide is best known locally as a Northern Sky Theater co-founder, performer, artistic advisor, board member, and writer. But he’s also an acclaimed singer-songwriter with three studio albums to his credit, in addition to the many songs he has written and co-written for musicals (including Belgians in Heaven, Packer Fans from Outer Space, Guys & Does, and a forthcoming Belgians prequel).

UW-Green Bay Provost Michael Alexander announced as conductor for Copland piece, Weidner Philharmonic Concert

Green Bay, Wis. — Michael Alexander, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s new provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, will conduct the first piece of music to be played by the Weidner Philharmonic at its inaugural concert, Sept. 28, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. The piece is Aaron Copland’s inspiring “Fanfare for the Common Man.”

A pre-concert dinner has been added to the evening’s events. The dinner will be held in the Weidner Center’s Fort Howard Hall at 6 p.m. More information, including dinner and dessert choices, can be found when purchasing the tickets online at Tickets for the dinner and the performance are sold separately.

Provost Alexander is also a featured guest in the new episode of the “Bird in the Wings” podcast hosted by Weidner Center Executive and Artistic Director Kelli Strickland. Alexander comes to UW-Green Bay having served as director of the School of Music at the University of Northern Colorado. He has also served as the interim director of the School of Music at Kennesaw State University in Georgia. The Grand Island, NY native lived in Wisconsin from 1995 to 2004. He earned his master’s degree at UW-Milwaukee and his doctorate at UW-Madison.

Buoyed by the strong community response to the orchestral concert that opened its 25th anniversary season in 2018, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay music faculty and UW-Green Bay’s Weidner Center for the Performing Arts, announced in May the establishment of the Weidner Center Philharmonic Orchestra. According to UW-Green Bay Music Program Chair and Associate Prof. Randy Meder, the Weidner Philharmonic will showcase the talents of UW-Green Bay music faculty, as well as other accomplished orchestral musicians who live and work in the region, in the outstanding acoustical environment of Cofrin Family Hall.

Northern Sky Theater mourns cherished former staff members, alumnus John Hansen

John Hansen ’74 (Communication and the Arts) died Feb. 8, 2019 in Colorado at his winter home since graduating from UW-Green Bay 45 years ago and founding his Mudslingers Pottery Studio. He was 66. The Door County Pulse published memories of Hansen, prominent to the success of Door County’s American Folklore Theatre (AFT) – over nearly three decades. UW-Green Bay to graduate 900 at commencement ceremonies May 12

Chancellor Thomas K. Harden will preside at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s 2012 spring commencement ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 12, in the Kress Events Center on campus.

The ceremony will honor students who complete their degrees in May or at the end of summer session in August. More than 900 University of Wisconsin-Green Bay students are eligible to participate in the spring commencement ceremony, including an all-time high number of undergraduate degree candidates.

Among other highlights:
• Delivering the Commencement Address will be Kathleen Christensen, director of the Working Longer program at the prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, based in New York City. She is a summa cum laude graduate of UW-Green Bay, having received her bachelor’s degree in Urban Analysis in 1973.

• Speaking for this year’s class will be Stephanie D. Freis of Newton, who is receiving a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with summa cum laude honors and distinction in the major.

• The University will present its highest community honor, the Chancellor’s Award, to Dr. James and Patricia Hinckley of Green Bay. The couple’s relationship with the University dates to the late 1970s and includes substantial involvement with, and support of, the University’s academic mission, the fine arts and Phoenix Athletics.
