Volunteers are needed for Make a Difference Day, a day dedicated to volunteering in the community, on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018 throughout the greater Green Bay area. UW-Green Bay students will be volunteering out in the community on Friday, Oct. 26, 2018. The Green Bay Press-Gazette has the full story.
Take a look at what is happening across the University of Wisconsin with this News Around the UW System video. Make A Difference Day efforts were the featured topic for UW-Green Bay.
Many area non-profits and agencies cleared their immediate “to-do” lists when nearly 250 UW-Green Bay students, staff and faculty volunteered in the Greater Green Bay community and on campus Friday, Oct. 27, 2017.
“Wonka Science was colorful, candy-filled fun this morning! A special thanks to UWGB for volunteering at our science stations as a part of “Make a Difference Day!” posted a representative from the Children’s Museum of Green Bay.
Here are a few “by the numbers” for the day:
- 250 participants
- 486 hours of service
- 24 thank you cards for Einstein Project
- 100-plus holiday cards for Veterans
- 150 s’mores bagged
- 7,674 lbs of product sorted and stocked, equaling 6,395 meals worth of food. (Without UW-Green Bay’s assistance, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin would have had to spend more than $621 of donated funds and worked 27 hours to complete the project).
- 1 kitten saved. While picking up litter on campus, UW-Green Bay students Zach Abegglen, Chue Lo and Bake Whitney discovered a lone, disoriented kitten. Zach, a commuter student, has since adopted the now fed, warm and happy feline.
Off-campus locations grateful for the help were:
- Paul’s Pantry – stocking
- Feeding America – sorting and bulk food processing
- Green Bay Botanical Garden – planting and clean up
- House of Hope – cleaning
- Freedom House
- Bay Area Humane Society
- Heritage Hill
- NEW Zoo – Zoo Boo
- Children’s Museum – Willy Wonka Science Experiment
Some volunteers stayed on campus. Projects included:
- The Einstein Project – Make Thank You Cards
- TRIO – Make Holiday Cards for Veterans
- Campus Clean Up – Litter
- Landscaping Residence Life
- Painting Corridors

Tomorrow is UW-Green Bay Make a Difference Day. Thanks to all who volunteered to make a difference in the community. The Green Bay Press-Gazette previewed efforts of the Volunteer Center of Brown County to make a difference in the lives of community members, mentioning UWGB efforts, as well.
Students and staff from UW-Green Bay’s Office of Student Life share a video they created with an important message — “We are calling on you to show the world that the Phoenix helps one another.” Give this two-minute video a watch and find out how you can be a part of the movement that helps “strengthen the community through positive actions.”
UW-Green Bay is again participating in the Make a Difference Day volunteer initiative, nationally observed on the fourth Saturday of October. On Friday, Oct. 27, 2017, the University will hold UWGB Make a Difference Day, its own day of community service. Volunteers may choose from more than a dozen on- and off-campus volunteer projects scheduled at various times throughout the day. The campus community is also invited to participate in service work on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017 organized through the Volunteer Center of Brown County. Learn more at www.uwgb.edu/Make-a-Difference-Day.
The Green Bay Press-Gazette outlined the 2017 Make A Difference Day efforts in Brown County, recognizing the more than 150 UW-Green Bay faculty, staff, and students who provide hundreds of hours of service each year on this day. UW-Green Bay will be volunteering as a campus on October 27, 2017. See more and register.
UW-Green Bay Make a Difference Day is now ready for registration. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to take a few hours to give back to the campus and the community. Please visit the UWGB Make a Difference Day website and pick a service opportunity for Friday, Oct. 27. Questions can be directed to Stephanie Kaponya, Ext. 2938.
The TRiO programs send appreciation for the creative efforts of more than 30 volunteers for Make a Difference Day. Volunteers crafted about 170 holiday cards for area veterans in just three hours! Thanks to student workers Brianna Fischer and Rose Hiebl’s direction and advice, (with help from Pinterest), all cards were both beautiful and personal. Each year, the Upward Bound program sends approximately 1,000 holiday cards to disabled veterans. Thanks to the UWGB Make a Difference Day, there are only 870 cards yet to make. If you are interested in helping, two more card-making dates are scheduled: From 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. Locations to be determined. Stop by the TRiO office at SS-1721 (across from the Dean’s office) if you want to help and these dates don’t meet your needs.
