UW-Green Bay to host Kwanzaa 2018: A Celebration of Unity, Dec. 8

GREEN BAY – In a time of fraction and discord, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA), Diversity Task Force, Office of Student Life and the Black Student Union (BSU) welcome the community to join together for a celebration of umoja (unity) at UW–Green Bay’s annual Kwanzaa Celebration! This year’s event will be held in the University Union Phoenix Rooms on Dec. 8, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with free food and entertainment for all.

Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of African and African-American culture and identity, based on the seven principles of African heritage. This year, we celebrate the principle of umoja, an attempt to strive for and maintain unity in the family, community and nation. All are welcome to attend regardless of background, faith or culture, as we celebrate the commonalities and values that bring us together rather than the differences that drive us apart.

Delivering the keynote address this year is Eddie Moore, Jr. Ph.D. Moore is the founder of America & MOORE, an organization that provides comprehensive diversity and cultural competency trainings and workshops for schools, businesses and other organizations around the world. He has presented at national and international conferences on issues of diversity, youth, community, cultural competency and more.

In addition to a lunch menu celebrating African and African-American heritage and cuisine, the Kwanzaa celebration will also feature unique performances ranging from spoken word poetry to dance to singing. Local vendors and non-profit organizations will also be on hand with additional resources, information, and unique products and opportunities for giving.
