UW-Green Bay to perform Handel’s Messiah as a sing-along

One-night performance is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3, Weidner Center

GREEN BAY – Handel’s Messiah is returning to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay this December, but this time as a sing-along. At the 7:30 p.m. performance on Saturday, Dec. 3, audience members are invited to join in with the choruses.

The UW-Green Bay Choral Ensembles, Green Bay Choral Artists, and Festival Orchestra will be joined on the stage by choirs from Algoma, Sevastopol and Southern Door High Schools, along with UW-Green Bay Alumni soloists. Prof. Randall Meder will conduct the concert — the sixth performance of Messiah since 2008. Meder, director of choral activities at UW-Green Bay, says he enjoys incorporating unique elements to each.

“Each time we perform Messiah, we try to do something different that we haven’t done in the past,” said Meder. “This year, the new twist will be to get the audience singing with the choirs on stage. Whether they want to sing all of the choruses or just the famous “Hallelujah” chorus at the end of the program, members of the audience can bring their own music to the concert and join in the fun.”

Attendees who plan to sing may choose to sit in designated voice sections (soprano, alto, tenor or bass), a mixed voice section or with family and friends anywhere in the audience. Those who do not wish to sing may sit in any non-designated area of the concert hall.

“This is not just a concert for people who want to sing along, but also for anyone who wants to enjoy the energy of a live performance where people will be participating actively from all around the concert hall,” Meder says.

The concert will last approximately 80 minutes and will be performed without an intermission. Attendees should bring their own printed score, which can be downloaded at http://www.weidnercenter.com/files/2016/09/IMSLP-Messiah-Vocal-Score.pdf. Seating is general admission. Music scores will not be sold at the concert. Smart devices such as tablets and iPads will be allowed in the concert hall to view the score. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the Weidner Center. However, it is recommended that attendees download the score to their device in advance.

Tickets are $14 in advance, and $17 at the door, and may be purchased at the University Ticketing and Information Center, online at ticketstaronline.com or by calling 920-465-2400. Seating is general admission. For more information, go to www.weidnercenter.com/events/handels-messiah/.
