UW-Green Bay announces 2009 Veterans Day reception

University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Chancellor Thomas Harden will lead an observation of Veterans Day, Nov. 11, by hosting the 2009 reception to recognize veterans associated with the University and local community.

All veterans — including students, faculty and staff — are invited along with dignitaries from the surrounding community to participate in the event at 4 p.m. in Phoenix Room B of the University Union.

The guest speaker for the Chancellor’s Veterans Reception will be Brigadier General William Gothard of the 353rd Civil Affairs Command. The 432nd Civil Affairs Unit in Green Bay falls under his command.

During a deployment to Iraq, Gothard led the 5th Iraqi Division Military Transition Team in Diyala Province. Gothard’s military honors include Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Military Freefall Badge, Special Forces Tab and Ranger Tab.

He is a 1978 graduate of the University of Dayton. He earned a Master of Arts Degree in Management from Webster University, St. Louis, Mo., and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle, Pa. Additionally, Gen. Gothard is also a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Air War College and, most recently, the Defense Acquisition University.

The chancellor’s reception will also feature displays remembering POW/MIA and Wisconsin Fallen from the Iraq/Afghanistan conflicts. Also, there will also be a display from the Camo Quilt Project, which makes quilts from the same camouflage material used in uniforms.

The public is invited to attend and show appreciation to local veterans. To make a reservation, please contact Elaina Koltz in the Financial Aid Office at (920) 465-2065 or koltze@uwgb.edu.
