UW-Green Bay Theatre and Dance presents ‘Crimes of the Heart,’ opening Oct. 17

UW-Green Bay, 'Crimes of the Heart'
UW-Green Bay Theatre and Dance will open its 2013-14 season with the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Crimes of the Heart, launching a seven-performance run Thursday, Oct. 17 in the Jean Weidner Theatre at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.

The work of playwright Beth Henley, Crimes of the Heart follows the three Magrath sisters, who have gathered at the family home in Hazlehurst, Mississippi after the youngest, Babe, shoots her husband in the stomach. Lenny, the oldest, is unmarried at 30 and facing diminishing marital prospects, while middle sister Meg is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast. Their troubles are grave, yet somehow hilarious, balancing comedy and drama in a way audiences will enjoy, said Associate Prof. John Mariano, who directs the show.

Crimes of the Heart“I love the fact that it does mix the comedy and the serious aspects of it so well,” Mariano said. “It’s really unique in that. There are parts of it that are very, very funny. But in the end it’s really a very moving play about the need for each other that the sisters have.”

UW-Green Bay junior Ashley Wisneski plays oldest sister Lenny. Crimes of the Heart is an enjoyable and relatable story, she said.

“I think anyone who has siblings, or sisters — I have four myself — will come to the show and say, ‘yeah, that’s sisterhood. That’s what happens,’ “ Wisneski said.

Performances of Crimes of the Heart will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17-19 and 23-26 in the Jean Weidner Theatre at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts on the UW-Green Bay campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.
