UW-Green Bay Lawton Gallery to present ‘Milwaukeeists’ exhibition Sept. 12-Oct. 3

The Lawton Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will present its first show of the fall season, “Milwaukeeists: 1996-2003,” Thursday, Sept. 12-Thursday, Oct. 3 in Theatre Hall on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive. It will kick off with an opening reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Sept. 12, including a 5 p.m. introduction by guest curator Nicholas Frank.

The “Milwaukeeists” exhibition explores the alternative artistic culture in Milwaukee during the eight-year period referenced in the show’s title. The exhibition includes paintings, photographs, installations, films and ephemera from the period, during which national attention was focused on Milwaukee’s art scene. The show, which will be accompanied by a catalogue, explores the rise of a scene and its lasting impact.

“This exhibit serves as a fascinating snapshot that preserves the flavor of this period as it charts the networks of artists who all decided to take the creation and presentation of culture into their own hands, and founded their own venues and institutions with which to do this,” said Lawton Gallery Curator Stephen Perkins. “While this kind of history is not particular to Milwaukee, this exhibition illustrates how a series of particularly fecund solutions were hatched up by the city’s artists, within a larger environment that they found was conducive to experimentation, coupled with a do-it-yourself spirit that propelled them forward.”

In association with the exhibit, the Green Bay Film Society will present “Milwaukeeists Onscreen,” a film and video program curated by Carl Bogner and Ben Balcom, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Neville Public Museum of Brown County, 210 Museum Place, Green Bay. Admission to the film is free for Brown County residents.

Located in Room 230 of Theatre Hall, the Lawton Gallery is open from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday during fall and spring semesters. All gallery events are free and open to the public.
