Jones, a veteran of the United States Air Force, will be officially sworn in to office and begins his official role as chief on Monday, August 5, 2019. The dedicated law enforcement official has 26 years of experience in the field and has been with UW-Green Bay since 2014. His background is a unique blend of federal, municipal, military and university law enforcement experience.

Jones has experience in felony level investigations, multi-million-dollar operating budgets and the supervision of dozens of law enforcement personnel. He previously served as the Superintendent of the United States Air Force Special Investigations Academy, and as the Criminal Justice Program Chair for a private university, leading to a strong background in policing in the academic environment.

Jones said he is honored and humbled by the appointment.

“I am extremely honored to serve as chief of police for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay,” he says. “The University Police Department takes pride in working together with members of our campus community to ensure that UW-Green Bay is a safe place to live, work, learn and grow. I am very humbled by this opportunity. GO PHOENIX!“

Jones has a strong understanding of university specific issues to include the Clery Act, Title IX, FERPA, HIPAA, bias incidents as well as student-focused community policing. He serves as the UW-Green Bay liaison to area law enforcement partners and holds key positions on joint teams (Brown County Child Abduction Response Team, Brown County Field Force Team, Wisconsin State Threat Liaison Officer, etc.). In the past year, he has been responsible for all law enforcement/emergency management coordination of the UW-Green Bay Project Coastal (Marinette, Sheboygan and Manitowoc campuses).

UW-Green Bay Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance, Sheryl Van Gruensven, said that after reviewing a number of excellent candidates, what was obvious to the search-and-screen committee, was Jones’ depth of experience, extensive community connections and collaborative spirit that make him an ideal fit for the future of UW-Green Bay Police.

“Dave’s extensive experience and his vision for a safe learning environment together with strong customer service and a focus on community policing make him an excellent choice to serve as UW-Green Bay’s next chief,” Van Gruensven said.
