Spots remain for July 10 SBDC, city of Green Bay franchise opportunities workshop

Registration remains open for “Opportunities in Franchising,” a Wednesday, July 10 workshop being offered by the UW-Green Bay Small Business Development Center, in partnership with the city of Green Bay.

The workshop will run from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Hyatt on Main, 333 Main St., Green Bay. Presented by the International Franchise Association (IFA), the oldest and largest trade association representing franchising, “Opportunities in Franchising” is designed for individuals who want to own or expand their own business, as well as those who have a general interest in learning how a franchise works. Workshop participants will learn from franchisors, franchisees, a franchise coach and a franchise attorney during the daylong event. They will be introduced to financial and technical experts who can help them pursue their goal of business ownership. Special incentives for minorities and women to become franchise owners also will be discussed.

Franchised businesses play an important role in the health of the U.S. economy, according to Miriam L. Brewer, Senior Director of Education and Diversity for the IFA. There are more than 825,000 franchise businesses across 300 business lines that provide nearly 18 million jobs — and generate more than $21 trillion for the U.S. economy — IFA statistics show.

Brewer will be one of the featured speakers during the daylong workshop event, offering a morning session titled “Franchising: A Business Model that Works (Fundamentals of Franchising).” That session will be followed by “Legal Aspects of Franchising: What I Need to Know Before Signing on the Dotted Line,” with Andrew Beilfuss, a partner with Milwaukee-based Quarles & Brady, LLP. The final morning session will feature a panel of experts speaking about and taking questions on their experiences with franchising.

After a networking lunch, the “Opportunities in Franchising” workshop will offer its closing session, “Finance and Technical Assistance: What Resources are Available?,” featuring a variety of business, municipality and economic development experts. A brief wrap-up will follow, and the day will end with time for networking with the following exhibitors: Advance — Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce; City of Green Bay Economic Development Office; Figaro’s Italian Pizza; FranNet; Great Clips; Kitchen Solvers; Northeast Wisconsin Technical College; Quarles & Brady, LLP; SCORE; The Entrepreneur’s Source; United States Small Business Administration; UW-Green Bay SBDC; and Vom Fass USA.
