UW-Green Bay offers Spanish Immersion for Professionals summer course

Necesita usted aprender Español?

Do you need to learn Spanish? The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Spanish Immersion for Professionals program can help.

Scheduled for Monday through Friday, Aug. 3-7, at UW-Green Bay, the program will provide an intensive language-learning experience for all levels of Spanish language learners. Registration is due by Monday, July 27.

The Spanish Immersion for Professionals program is designed for professionals such as customer service representatives, call center employees, hospitality workers, social workers, bankers, teachers and health care workers. Along with instruction in language and grammar, courses tailored to health care, education, business, law and travel and leisure will be offered. A substantial online resource component will be part of this program. Students will learn in UW-Green Bay’s high-tech classrooms and will enjoy meals in the University Union facilities.

This program is designed for every level. Students will participate in an online pretest that will determine your skill level. A lineup of experienced instructors will teach to every skill level represented by the class. Beginner level students will have an ‘intensive’ experience — some English will be spoken to facilitate the teaching. For the intermediate and advanced students, no English will be spoken in the classes.

NEW FOR SUMMER 2015!! Morning sessions will cover reading, writing and grammar. The morning sessions are either face to face on the UWGB campus or online. If a person’s job or schedule doesn’t allow for a full day to be away, students can complete the grammar sessions independently by submitting homework in the evenings for the next day.

Afternoon sessions will include engaging international discussions with Spanish professionals in Cuernavaca, Mexico, an international film, and a final exam on the last day. The program will cover ‘career vocabulary’ plus travel and leisure, including sessions by career category. The afternoon session of the program is mandatory face to face.

• A homework tutor and language table will be available to all at the end of the day.

Each class day will end with a session on culture and current affairs in the Spanish-speaking world. In late afternoon and evening, participants can choose to join conversation tables hosted by native Spanish speakers, and practice with each other over dinner.

Curricular Director and instructor, Prof. Cristina Ortiz, along with community instructors Amelia Canilho of Sturgeon Bay and Karla Weibel of Green Bay will provide instruction at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
Fees for the program are $425 for noncredit instruction; $685 which includes two undergraduate credits in Spanish; or $1,050 which includes two graduate credits in Education. The fees for all three include beverage breaks and lunch each day.

For out-of-town participants, an array of hotel venues is available in close proximity to campus. (See the program’s website for more details.)
