UW-Green Bay to present jazz concert April 30

UW-Green Bay’s Jazz I, Jazz II, and Vocal Jazz ensembles will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at the Cofrin Family Hall within the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.

The event will feature a wide range of composers and arrangers, including arrangements from UW-Green Bay Associate Prof. John Salerno. Salerno directs the Jazz I and Vocal Jazz ensembles, while Associate Prof. Adam Gaines directs the Jazz II Ensemble.

The Jazz II Ensemble will perform first, playing “Makin Whoopee!” (Gus Kahn and Walter Donaldson, arr. Gordon Goodwin), “A New Standard” (Vince Norman), “Together Houses” (Vince Norman), “Mambo No. 5” (Dámaso Pérez Prado), and “Mercy Mercy Mercy” (Joe Zawinul, arr. Phil Wilson).

After Jazz II, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble will take the stage, starting with “Four” (Miles Davis), “It’s You Or No One” (arr. Kelly Marsh), “Whenever I Call You Friend” (Kenny Loggins, arr. John Salerno), and “Brahms Lullaby” (J. Brahms, arr. John Salerno). The group’s final piece will be “Four Season’s Medley,” arranged by UW-Green Bay student Nick Schommer.

Up next, the Jazz I Ensemble will perform “Alianza” (Eric Moralis), “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” (arr. John Salerno), “Beyond the Sea” (arr. Bob Nowak), and “In My Life” (Lennon/McCartney, arr. John Salerno). They will conclude the concert with “Take the A Train” arranged by Arturo Sandoval.
