UW-Green Bay to host Summer Jazz Ensemble camp July 7-11

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will host its summer Jazz Ensemble Camp from Sunday, July 7 through Thursday, July 11 on campus at 2420 Nicolet Drive. Students entering grades eight through 12 are eligible to attend.

UW-Green Bay jazz faculty members and camp director, Associate Prof. John Salerno, are bringing back this one-of-a-kind jazz experience for instrumentalists. With a multitude of jazz styles and musical genres from which to choose, students will have performance opportunities seldom available in school programs.

Salerno, who directs the jazz program at UW-Green Bay, has toured the country playing jazz with a host of notable musicians. Working with Salerno, jazz instructors from across the region will help camp participants become more confident and inspirational performers. A preliminary list of camp instructors includes UW-Green Bay Associate Prof. Adam Gaines – trumpet; William Hill – Green Bay; Steve Arendt – saxophone, Green Bay; and Terry Iattoni – drums, Green Bay. You can keep up with staff updates on the camps website, www.uwgb.edu/camps/music/jazzEnsemble.

The camp will feature a talent show and a free public concert showcasing the camp instructors at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 10 in UW-Green Bay’s University Theatre. The camp will also include a free public performance of the student jazz groups at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 11 in the University Theatre. Outstanding students will be chosen to receive partial scholarships to the 2014 jazz camp.

In addition to the Jazz Camp lineup, the 132nd Army Jazz Band will be in concert in the UW-Green Bay University Theatre, on Monday night, July 8. Tickets are free with general admission seating, and will be available starting in June.

Jazz Ensemble Camp begins with auditions and an all-camp meeting on Sunday, July 7. Classes meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Students who live on campus will have supervised evening activities.

Students may attend the camp as commuters or they may live in student housing on the UW-Green Bay campus. Camp fees are $275 for commuters and $495 for residents. In addition to instruction, the residential fee includes room and board, a T-shirt, counselor supervision, and transportation to evening activities.

Camp information and registration are available online at www.uwgb.edu/camps/music/jazzEnsemble. Information also is available by phone at (920) 465-2775 or (800) 621-2313.
