Next 360° Thursdays: Modern jazz, Slovak trio, Polish composer
UW-Green Bay Music will examine modern jazz though an Eastern European lens, presenting the music of Krzysztof Komeda in the next installment of its 360° Thursdays concert series, at 6:30 p.m. March 5 in Fort Howard Hall at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.
Komeda was an important member of the modern jazz scene in his native Poland and throughout Europe until his untimely death at age 37, the result of a fall, in 1969.
UW-Green Bay Music Profs. Adam Gaines and John Salerno, trumpet and saxophone, respectively, will perform Komeda’s music with the Nothing But Swing Trio. The three members of the jazz trio from Slovakia are Klaudius Kováč, piano, Róbert Ragan, doublebass, and Peter Solárik, drums. Throughout the program, Gaines will highlight some of Komeda’s most important contributions through the use of film clips and lecture.
Komeda was perhaps best known for his movie scores, most notably the Roman Polanski films Rosemary’s Baby, The Fearless Vampire Killers, Knife in the Water and Cul-de-sac. His album Astigmatic (1965) was widely regarded as one of the most important European jazz albums, credited with offering a unique take on the dominant American approach to the art form.
Now in its second season, the 360° Thursdays concert series features a diversity of performance styles designed to broaden attendees’ horizons and deepen their understanding of music. Emblematic of UW-Green Bay’s interdisciplinary academic approach, the concert-lecture events help students, faculty, staff and community members connect with music in more meaningful ways, considering a single work of music through multiple perspectives.
Each 360° Thursdays performance takes place at 6:30 p.m. in Fort Howard Hall at the Weidner Center on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive. Concerts are free but a $5 suggested donation is appreciated.
