Spanish for Professionals sessions set to begin

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is offering an undergraduate Spanish certificate program designed for the working professional.

The Spanish in the Professions (SIP) course provides learners with a flexible approach to language learning by combining individual, computer-based and multimedia learning with face-to-face language practice, with intensive face-to-face classes.

The course features 30 hours of instruction overseen by UW-Green Bay faculty. It will be offered in Wood Hall 213 and 214, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 27, March 13 and 27, April 17 and May 8. There is online course material between the face-to-face class times. It can be taken for non-credit, 2 undergraduate credits or 2 graduate credits.

The program is designed for beginning or intermediate students who want to put Spanish to immediate use in their community or place of work.

With front-line professionals in mind, including customer service representatives, call center employees, hospitality workers, bankers, social workers, teachers and health care workers, students will learn at a comfortable pace, whether they are beginners or intermediate Spanish-speakers.

Students will quickly learn conversational phrases necessary for the workplace and grow to have a deeper understanding of the grammar and written language structure of Spanish.

As communities and workplaces become more diverse, more employers will need professionals with Spanish language skills.

Students will take an online pre-test to determine skill level. The certificate program is not designed for people who are fluent or at advanced levels in Spanish.

“With ever-increasing demographic changes in Wisconsin, employers and employees alike are looking for ways to meet the needs of Spanish-speaking customers, students, clients and or patients. The beauty of this program is its flexibility to meet the student wherever he or she is, and provide an enhancement to an existing diploma or degree,” said Mona Christensen, director of Camps and Conferences at UW-Green Bay. “UW-Green Bay has for years offered Spanish for Professionals courses and programs. The new certificate will be proof positive to employers that students can speak Spanish at an intermediate proficiency level upon completion of the course requirements.”

Students may register for the spring SIP credit classes. Course fees are $552.14 for two undergraduate credits. This class is also offered for non-credit for $289.
