Music faculty members Hansen, Mace to perform clarinet, piano recital Feb. 7

UW-Green Bay Music will present its first faculty recital of spring semester 2014 at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7 in Fort Howard Hall at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.

The concert will feature Associate Prof. Eric Hansen on clarinet and Lecturer Abigail Mace on piano. It is free and open to the public.

The recital will begin with Première Sonate for Clarinet and Piano by 18th century composer François Devienne, then continue with Dance Preludes by 20th century composer Witold Lutoslawski. Following a brief intermission, Hansen and Mace will perform Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in F minor, Op. 120 No. 1 by well-known 19th century composter Johannes Brahms. They will conclude with Solo De Concours by André Messager (1853-1929)

Hansen, a native of Wyoming, is the clarinet instructor at UW-Green Bay. He is a dedicated teacher and active performer of solo, chamber and large ensemble music. Hansen has co-authored a clarinet method book, “Extreme Clarinet,” which focuses on the development of advanced techniques including multiple articulation, circular breathing and extreme upper-register tone control. His expertise ranges from standard classical music to advanced contemporary music, and he has performed across the United States and internationally. Hansen holds a Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of Kentucky; a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Arizona State University; and a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance, also from Arizona State.

Pianist Mace is a specialist in baroque music who also performs on harpsichord and fortepiano. She completed studies in early music at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague on a Fulbright Fellowship and has performed with the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Jeanne Lamon. Mace’s award-winning doctoral lecture recital, “From Venice to Weimar: Italian Influences in the Keyboard Toccatas of J. S. Bach, BWV 910-916” was presented at the UW-Green Bay 360° Thursdays lecture-concert series during fall semester 2013. Mace is returning to her hometown after earning a Doctor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Music degree from Vanderbilt University.
