Community Rapid (surge) Testing will continue at UW-Green Bay beginning Wednesday, Jan. 27
Green Bay, Wis.—University of Wisconsin System President Tommy Thompson announced today, an extension of community COVID-19 surge (rapid) testing sites, hosted at UW System campuses. At the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the free, rapid testing site will return to the Weidner Center location beginning, Wednesday, January 27, 2021 and will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to the public. Anyone five years of age and older can be tested.
The testing site has been popular, with 350-400 tests administered each day. At the Weidner Center site (2450 Weidner Center Drive) 15,923 total antigen tests and 749 PCR tests (16,672 total) were distributed since mid-November.
“At UW-Green Bay, we continually strive to solve problems and be a resource for our community,” said Chancellor Michael Alexander. “I am proud that we can continue to provide testing for our region while simultaneously also hosting a site for vaccinations. We are making every effort to help our community stay safe and get to the other side of the pandemic.”
After conducting more than 220,000 free COVID-19 tests through last week at UW System campuses, most of the 22 surge testing sites were scheduled to close, including the Weidner Center site. However, in partnership with the UW System, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will be providing 140,000 additional Abbott BinaxNOW tests and associated confirmatory PCR tests for use across Wisconsin in the coming weeks.
Individuals seeking to be tested need to register online; enter the Green Bay Campus off of Nicolet Drive at the main entrance; watch for signage leading them to the testing site (located at the Weidner Center, 2450 Weidner Center Drive). An employee will help registrants administer the test themselves, under supervision.
All participants must register. See recommendations before arrival. For any questions regarding Rapid Testing please call 1-800-635-8611.
“We thank the federal government for their confidence in us, and we’re pleased that our university sites can continue to be used in the fight against this insidious disease,” President Thompson said. “Where there’s a problem, I want the UW System here to help.”
At the request of federal officials, UW System universities set up surge testing sites last fall, and testing began in early November. The testing identified nearly 18,000 potential positive carriers of the virus who were advised to isolate.
