It has been a significant year for UW-Green Bay. Take a look back at the 18 standout moments of 2018!

New Bachelor’s and Masters programs

In 2018, UW-Green Bay’s academic offerings grew to meet local and national workforce demands. New degrees approved and/or implemented in 2018 include a Bachelor of Fine ArtsBachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Mechanical EngineeringExecutive Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Athletic Training.

Inaugural Krash the Kress event

Green Bay men’s basketball took to the floor of the Kress Events Center for the first-ever Horizon Leauge Conference game on Feb. 16, 2018. The game was a part of a sold-out event, Krash the Kress, for UW-Green Bay season ticket holders, students, alumni, prospective students and friends. Participants attended a tailgate before cheering the Phoenix. The event was deemed a success by organizers and a second Krash the Kress will take place during Homecoming on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019.

Manitowoc Campus renovations complete

In March, an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony was hosted to celebrate the completion of renovations at the UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus (at the time, UW-Manitowoc).  The investment included moving and updating the library; creating a new science commons; and updating art studios, science labs and classrooms. Electrical, plumbing, HVAC and other infrastructure items were also updated or replaced. Read more.

First-ever College Draft Day Powered by UW-Green Bay

Nearly 200 local high school juniors joined University staff, faculty and student volunteers at Lambeau Field April 27, 2018 for a fast-paced interactive day of learning about post-secondary education options. Students in attendance rotated through “booths and drills” focusing on various aspects of secondary education and were able to connect with current students who served as “coaches,” leading the high school juniors through the day. The informative day capped off with words from Mason Crosby, Green Bay Packers Kicker, over lunch and the opportunity to get a photo  with Phlash and Crosby and sign a “Letter of Intent” along side Crosby, promising to commit to the college process. History program receives Regents Teaching Award

The UW-Green Bay History program received the University of Wisconsin 2018 annual Regents Teaching Excellence Award (in the department/program category). The award letter referred to the program’s impressive dedication to teaching… “UW-Green Bay History was selected from among a select group of candidates, all of whom demonstrated an impressive dedication to teaching and an ability to inspire students with an enthusiasm for learning in general and for making interdisciplinary connections in the classroom and beyond,” the letter stated. Weidner Center’s 25th Season

The Weidner Center kicked off its Silver Celebration, May 24, 2018 with the announcement of an exclusive lineup of performances for the 25th year. The center experienced a major refresh and updated lobby over the summer and the renovation was completed just time for a 25th Season Anniversary Concert, Sept. 22, 2018.

Four campuses, one University

After a system level decision to restructure the UW System’s two-year campus system, UW-Green Bay, UW-Marinette, UW-Manitowoc and UW-Sheboygan joined together as one university with one mission. As of July 1, 2018 the new UW-Green Bay is a four-campus university with a 16-county footprint, 700 ongoing employees and an enrollment of 8,443 students.

Partnership with Titletown Tech

In July, UW-Green Bay and UW System joined Microsoft and Green Bay Packers as TiteltownTech partners. As part of the partnership, UW-Green Bay will provide an Entrepreneur-in-Residence.  Alumnus Craig Dickman will serve as managing director. TitletownTech is an initiative that will bring world-class digital innovation and expertise to the region and will be headquartered in Titletown, the development west of Lambeau Field.

Updates to Freshman Orientation

The Class of 2022 experienced a new and improved version of FOCUS (First Year Connections for UW-Green Bay Students) in August, participating in some first-time happenings. The class participated in a group service project, volunteering at Bay Shore Park, and celebrated together afterwards at a Lambeau Field tailgate. This class also partook in a Freshmen Convocation, a new event to designed to formally welcome the calss. See more.

First doctoral program launched

UW-Green Bay’s first-ever cohort of doctoral candidates began their journey to a doctoral degree in First Nations Education this past fall. The new program is centered in Indigenous knowledge systems and draws upon Indigenous teaching and learning methods from elders and oral scholars and faculty expertise in First Nations Education. The program is practitioner-focused and driven by professional and community needs. Read more.

STEM Center Groundbreaking

On September 17, 2018, UW-Green Bay and partners broke ground for the new Brown County STEM Innovation Center. The center, on the UW-Green Bay campus will be home to the Richard J. Resch School of Engineering, the Einstein Project, UW-Extension and Brown County’s Land and Water Conservation departments. Read more.

Archives receives Governor’s Archive Award

The University Archives and Area Research Center staff was awarded the Governor’s Archive Award 2018 on October 24, 2018. Matt Blessing, state archivist and division administrator for the Wisconsin Historical Society presented the award and shared that UW-Green Bay Archivist Deb Anderson, along with her staff, are admired statewide for the leadership and collaboration they demonstrate as they work with faculty to immerse archives into the classroom experience. Sheboygan Campus faculty member receives Underkofler Award for Teaching

On Friday, October 26, 2018, Valerie Murrenus Pilmaier accepted the Alliant Energy Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award. Alliant Energy Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award is an endowed award from Alliant Energy given each year to three teachers within the University of Wisconsin System from the Madison, Platteville, Baraboo, Fond du Lac, Richland, Rock or Sheboygan campuses who personify the dedication of faculty and staff as teachers and who communicate their subject matter effectively, inspiring their students with an enthusiasm for learning. TedxUW-Green Bay

The inaugural TEDxUW-Green Bay, a collaboration between the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Weidner Center, was a sell-out, Nov. 1, 2018.  The event, featuring eight speakers (including three alumni and two faculty members), brought community and campus together for an evening of learning and fun. Event organizers are optimistic for a return of the event in 2019. See more.

Phuture Phoenix celebrates 15th year

The Phuture Phoenix program celebrated its fifteenth year of serving local students! Each year local students visit campus and envision their future as college students. This year more than 1,600 fifth graders visited on Oct. 10-11, 2018. More than 300 UW-Green Bay students served as role models leading the students around. All students who participate in the Phuture Phoenix Campus Visit days are eligible to apply for a Phuture Phoenix Scholarship if they choose to attend UW-Green Bay after graduating high school.

Comedian Charlie Berens, best known for his viral comedy series, “The Manitowoc Minute,” took advantage of Wisconsinites’ ability to laugh at themselves at his sold-out Weidner Center show, March 7, 2108. Good Times Programming brought in both Berens, and opening act UW-Green Bay alumnus John Egan ’07 (Communication Processes). See more.

Outdoor Recreation Complex Grand Opening

The community celebrated the grand opening of the newly-constructed Kress Family Outdoor Recreation Complex, August 24, 2018. The evening included a welcome back to the 1978 men’s soccer team, an all-soccer alumni reunion, a tailgate enjoyed by members of the four campus communities, donors and community members and a first kick by field namesake, Phoenix Hall of Fame Coach Aldo Santaga. Marinette/Menomiee Community Advances to Small Business Revolution’s Top 10

Marinette, Wisconsin and neighboring city Menominee, Michigan are in the running to appear on season four of the television show “Small Business Revolution—Main Street.” This means a visit from makeover celebrity Ty Pennington and $500,000 grant. Marinette/Menominee has made the 10 finalists and is now competing to be selected for the Top Five remaining cities in the running.
