UW-Green Bay campus closes early on Dec. 20

UPDATE, 6 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21 — University of Wisconsin-Green Bay officials report that as of 5:30 a.m. today (Friday, Dec. 21), roads on and near campus are in decent winter driving condition following yesterday’s snowfall. Crews are continuing to tidy up with plowing and sanding but it should be a normal business day as employees report for work. Kelly Franz, the University’s vice chancellor for business and finance, extends a special note of appreciation to the staff of Facilities Management and Public Safety for going above and beyond over the last two days.

UW-Green Bay Chancellor Thomas K. Harden distributed the following email to all faculty and staff shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20:

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus will be closed effective 1 p.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 20) and remain closed for the remainder of the day. We anticipate we will be able to resume regular business hours on Friday morning.

Public Safety and Facilities Management staff members inform me that while roads on campus and in the immediate vicinity are in decent winter driving conditions as of mid-morning, they are concerned about high winds and more snow expected later this afternoon.

Exempt from the 1 p.m. closing, of course, are the police and road crew members who will remain on the job this afternoon. We appreciate their professionalism and dedication. I’m told they plan to take a break around 5 p.m. to evaluate whether to continue their plowing, salting and sanding this evening, or return early Friday morning. In any event, travel on campus is not recommended later today.

In closing, I am obligated to remind everyone that employees should always use their own judgment about whether they can safely travel to or from campus, and if and when they should report. Faculty and staff are directed to contact their immediate supervisors if they have questions about the winter storm and its impact on their operations. The UW-Green Bay Winter Storm Policy is online at http://www.uwgb.edu/provost/policies/storm.asp

Thank you for all you do for our University. Drive safely. And Go Phoenix!
