Services set for Maria Hinton

We brought you the sad news yesterday of the passing of Maria Hinton, 103, a revered Tribal Elder and award-winning UW-Green Bay alumna who fought to preserve the language and culture of the Oneida people. Hinton will be memorialized during a visitation beginning at 5 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday, July 31) at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth St., De Pere. The Oneida Hymn Singers will sing at 6:30 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., according to Hinton’s obituary, published in today’s Green Bay Press-Gazette. A traditional Oneida longhouse wake will take place beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 at the Oneida longhouse, and Hinton’s funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, also at the Oneida longhouse. In keeping with cultural tradition, there will be a fire lit in Hinton’s honor, and for people to offer prayers; that will take place at Hinton’s original homestead, 4204 W. Mason St., Oneida. Friends and family may come to the fire to offer condolences and donations to the family; online condolences can be expressed at www.ryanfh.com.
