March 28 UPDATE: The UW-Green Bay women’s basketball team saw a historic season come to a close with a 86-76 loss to the No. 3 team in the nation, Baylor, in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament.
UPDATE: The UW-Green Bay women’s basketball team defeated Big Ten champion Michigan State 65-56 Tuesday night in a second-round NCAA Tournament game in Wichita, Kan. The Phoenix, 34-1 and riding a 25-game winning streak, advances to the Dallas Regional next weekend. They’ll tip off against the region’s top seed, Baylor, at 5:30 p.m. Sunday (March 27) at the American Airlines Center. Baylor, 33-2 and ranked No. 3 in the country, has a national player of the year candidate in 6-8 center Brittney Griner.
There have been some great teams, victories and winning streaks through the years for the UW-Green Bay women’s basketball program, but few could be compared to this year. The Phoenix, 32-1 overall as it entered NCAA Tournament play March 20, dominated the Horizon League and finished unbeaten at home, with a 74-63 tournament championship win over Butler, March 13.
Prior to the Horizon tournament, the program extended its run of consecutive conference regular-season titles to 13 — marking the longest active streak in the nation. The program has not had a losing season since 1976-77, its fourth year in existence. It’s the 14th straight year that the Phoenix has advanced to post-season play, the 16th time since moving to Division I in 1987-88.
